Pick Greatsword. It is well-rounded with strong PvE and AoE, has no gamepass requirement, and Greatswords dominate the early chest pool (Wooden / Worn Iron / Iron / Refined / Lightsteel all drop from Forest Chest). If you prefer quick attacks over wide swings, Katana is the second-best beginner option.

Best Build for Boss Farming

Katana is the highest DPS mastery for single-target boss fights. The Mastery 5 skill Thousand Slashes deals 2,700 PvP damage — nearly double any other mastery's Mastery-5 skill — and grants I-frames during the animation. Pair with Shadowborn or Lunarian for up to +35% extra Katana damage.
